Natural Dyes
Dr. Sherry Haar’s and Apparel and Textile graduate and undergraduate student scholarship includes aspects of sustainability in the research and design of apparel and textiles. Dr. Haar grows over 15 natural dyestuffs and is investigating colorfastness properties and possibilities for alternative fiber crops. Dr. Haar’s first textile design using her naturally dyed fabrics earned an artist merit award with American Heart Association and Mercy Regional Hospital. Dr. Haar will travel to France in November to expand her knowledge of natural dyes by attending the World Shibori Conference and touring fields of indigo, madder and ochre.
Erica Schrader is currently completing her Master’s in Apparel and Textiles and assists Dr. Sherry Haar with her natural dye scholarship. Her master’s research focuses on determining natural dye mordants which yield superior wash and light fastness.
Sherry Haar attended the International Shibori Symposium in France in 2008 and completed national workshops to expand her knowledge of natural dyes.
Sherry Haar will present a curriculum-related research project titled Natural Dyestuffs: Sustainable Practices for Color Effects at the 2009 International Textile and Apparel Association’s annual conference in Seattle, WA.
