Salina Library Energy Conservation

The K-State at Salina Library has reviewed its sustainability efforts as requested. The greatest concentration of energy use in libraries stem from lighting, paper, and PCs. Over the past year, the K-State at Salina Library has taken steps to reduce energy consumption and output in these three areas.

In June 2008, the K-State at Salina Library instituted a policy of turning the 35 computers and monitors off when not in use. Monitors power off when idle for 15 minutes, while computers automatically power off at the end of the service day. This practice assists in reducing the amount of electricity required to power idle machines.

The library recently removed a 50” LCD monitor from the main floor (the energy required to power and cool this is in and of itself is a positive move toward sustainability). The natural lighting produced as a result of exposing the floor to ceiling windows is sufficient for the work area. Library staff are able to turn off one bank of fluorescent lights for 6 -8 hours on a normal weather day.

Aviation Technology Energy Conservation:

  • Aircraft are scheduled to help reduce energy consumption by the use of the most fuel efficient aircraft wherever possible.
  • We attempt to combine trips and double up on hotel rooms when traveling
  • Software is now being utilized to allow Professional Flight students to reserve planes for flight labs on-line instead of in person.
  • Turning off lights in unused lab/storage space
