Recycling
Why Recycle? Kansas State University is committed to becoming a more environmentally aware community by expanding recycling efforts across the campus. Our goal is to enhance the campus environment, minimize the waste stream, decrease waste management costs and help our planet.
The Recycling Program started in 1989 and is coordinated through the Facilities / Custodial Department. Currently 30 buildings are participating in some form of recycling. The Program is now being restructured to better serve the University community. We are relocating existing receptacles, adding new receptacles, including new products, increasing staff, and opening a new dedicated sorting facility on campus in order to improve recycling efforts.
Please see the following websites to learn more about what can be recycled, where, and the various programs related to the recycling program like Gameday Recycling, Recyclemania, and more.

Type:Waste Management / Minimization
Investment:
K-State Facilities is cooperating with the USDA to transition the old Wind Erosion Lab that is North of the Derby Residence Hall Complex to K-State's first dedicated recycling sorting facility for campus. The facility was damaged by the tornado that hit campus in June 2008, and the university has invested over $100,000 of city/university funds to repair the facility for use by the recycling program.
Impact:
K-State recycles approximately 10% of its total waste stream by weight. During the Spring 2009 Recyclemania competition, our waste diversion reached approximately 20% over a ten week period.
Recycling is clearly an area where there is a lot of opportunity for growth on campus.
