History
K-State has been around as long as any land-grant school in the country, and we plan to be around for many years to come. The sustainability of K-State depends on the sustainability of the broader society it serves and on which it depends.
In recent years, K-State has increasingly grappled with questions of sustainability throughout our campus academic, student, operations, alumni, and partners communities. Some of the developments that have marked this path include:
1989 - Creation of the university's recycling program
2000 - founding of Students for Environmental Action, the first student environmental advocacy organization
July 2006 - first annual Dialog on Sustainability organized by the Consortium on Environmental Stewardship And Sustainability
2007 - creation of the Stewardship Subcommittee to incorporate sustainability into K-State's planning activities
April 2008 - creation of Director of Sustainability student government cabinet position
June 2008 - creation of university-wide Director of Sustainability position
December 2008 - creation of Sustainability Task Force to make comprehensive set of recommendations for K-State efforts in sustainability
January 2009 - K-State hosts its first annual statewide sustainability conference, Leading Kansas in Sustainability
September 1, 2009 - K-State sustainability website goes live
September 29, 2009 - K-State Sustainability Task Force issues its final report (download here)
Our efforts are ongoing...
